Messi reaches 60 goals for Barcelona in 2011-12

Two goals against the Aragonese strugglers brings up yet another landmark for the irrepressible Rosario native, and puts him within touching distance of Muller's record.

Personal milestones continue to fall like dominoes for Barcelona's Argentine phenomenon Lionel Messi, as he struck twice against Zaragoza on Saturday evening to take his tally to 60 goals for the 2011-12 season in all competitions.

The 24-year-old forward was on target for the Liga and Champions League holders 39 minutes into their match against the Aragonese side, who had taken the lead early in the first half thanks to Carlos Aranda's header.

Messi struck from 15 yards out after receiving the ball from Alexis Sanchez to record his first of the match, putting Barca 2-1 up three minutes after Carles Puyol had levelled proceedings.

The second came from the penalty spot, as the Argentine smashed the ball home with five minutes remaining to make it 3-1 for the Catalan giants. As well as bringing him up to 60 for the season, the strike marked his 157th Liga goal; taking him past the mark set by Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskas during his eight years with the club.

The triple Ballon d'Or winner's 60th goal this campaign puts him just seven behind Gerd Muller's all-time record for a single European season. The German idol netted 67 times for Bayern Munich in the 1972-73 campaign.

Messi's goals so far this term include 38 in La Liga; two in the Copa del Rey; three Supercopa strikes; one in the Uefa Super Cup; two in the Club World Cup and a further 14 in the Champions league.
